How it all Started

The short version:
My Dad and I have been meeting for breakfast (almost) every Sunday since February 2022 and have been trying biscuits and gravy at every place we go. For two years, I have been told to start a blog and rank them. This is the start of that.

The Long Version:
This is a slightly complicated story to tell, because the beginning is important but it shares something I haven’t shared with many people.

At the end of 2021, I wasn’t looking for new job because I love the work my team and I are doing at Quad City Arts, but a job description was shared with me. A job description for a position in Oregon, and an incredibly unique one. I couldn’t get it out of my head, and at the 11th hour, I submitted my resume. Then in January of 2022, they reached out for an interview, and by early February I was traveling to Oregon to interview. If I was offerred the job and accepted, I would be moving across the country, leaving my family and friends.

Before I left for the interview, I wanted to tell my parents in person, and asked my parents to breakfast, and it ended up being just my Dad and I, at a Maid-Rite in Milan, Illinois. Before I could tell him my news, he ordered his meal, which was the exact meal I was going to order.

I shared my news with my Dad and we ended up talking for another hour. Then at the end of the meal, Dad asked if we could meet at the Maid-Rite the Sunday after I returned. Then we ate at Maid-Rite for a month in a row, until we started to going to other restaurants in the Quad Cities area. Everytime we went to a new place, we ordered some variation of biscuits and gravy. Dad joked about rating them and starting a blog. At every meal, he started to give his thoughts on the biscuits and gravy. The more we told people, the more people suggested a blog.

So, two years later, I am finally starting the blog.

Why now? It’s hard to pinpoint one reason.
I want to write more.
I’m realizing that we have a “Top 5” for biscuits and gravy, but I can only remember the #1 spot.
Conversations with my Dad have been interesting and I am learning about his life, and I want to remember it and share that with my siblings.

So, two years later, I am finally starting the blog.

What to expect from future posts? A blog in three parts.

  1. The Restaurant
  2. The Food
  3. The Conversation

More to come…

It’s not always just Dad. Sometimes others join.
